Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription just got more expensive – and the timing couldn’t be more on-the-nose. Starting today, May 20, 2026, new PS Plus subscribers in select regions will pay higher monthly and quarterly prices, as Sony cites “ongoing market conditions” for the increase. It’s the second PS Plus price hike in recent years, and fans are not particularly happy about it.
What’s Actually Changing
The price increases apply to the Essential tier’s short-term plans. In the US, the one-month subscription climbs from $9.99 to $10.99, while the three-month plan jumps from $24.99 to $27.99. European subscribers are looking at €9.99 per month and €27.99 for three months, and UK players will pay £7.99 monthly or £21.99 for three months.
The 12-month annual plan is not affected by this round of increases, which means yearly subscribers are safe for now. PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium pricing also weren’t mentioned in Sony’s announcement – though Sony left the door open for future adjustments there as well.
Who Gets Hit – and Who Doesn’t
Importantly, the increases only apply to new subscribers in the affected regions. If you’re already a PS Plus member, your rate stays the same unless your subscription lapses or you make changes to your plan. The exception to this is Turkey and India, where all subscribers – existing and new – are subject to the new pricing.
Sony’s Reasoning – and the Community’s Reaction
Sony’s explanation is brief and familiar: the increase is driven by “ongoing market conditions.” That’s the same language the company used during previous price adjustments. Unsurprisingly, the PlayStation community has pushed back, with many pointing out that charging a monthly fee just to access online multiplayer – a feature that was free in the PS3 era – already feels outdated. Following a year that included hardware price increases for PS5, another subscription hike is rubbing salt into an open wound.
If you’re currently unsubscribed and rely on PS Plus, locking in an annual plan now before any further increases might be worth considering. For everyone else, the Essential tier’s day-to-day value hasn’t changed – it still includes the monthly free games lineup and online multiplayer access.
