Hironobu Sakaguchi – the creator of Final Fantasy – is in hot water this week after publicly praising an AI-generated video imagining what a Final Fantasy VI remake might look like. The community reaction was swift and unforgiving, and Sakaguchi’s follow-up response has only muddied the waters further.
What Happened
A clip began circulating on social media showing an AI-generated mockup of a fully 3D Final Fantasy VI, complete with reimagined characters, environments, and animations. The video caught Sakaguchi’s eye, and he shared it with the caption “Pretty awesome, huh?” – a simple remark that set off a firestorm.
The gaming community – particularly those who follow Final Fantasy closely – was not impressed. The video was widely described as “AI slop”: visually unconvincing, with unnatural animation, little artistic direction, and the telltale signs of generative AI doing its best impression of a human creative vision. Fans were quick to point out the ethical concerns with AI art tools trained on the work of human artists without their consent.
Fellow Devs Weighed In
Even some of Sakaguchi’s Square Enix contemporaries pushed back. Romancing SaGa director Akitoshi Kawazu reportedly reached out to explain why people were upset – though he also agreed that Final Fantasy VI deserves a proper remake treatment, comparing it favourably to what Final Fantasy VII received.
That nuance – yes, FF6 deserves a remake, no, not like this – captures where most fans actually stand. The backlash wasn’t about whether the game should be remade. It was about a legendary creator casually endorsing AI-generated content in a creative space where artists are already fighting for their livelihoods.
Sakaguchi’s Response
Rather than stepping back, Sakaguchi doubled down in a follow-up post. He expressed bewilderment at the intensity of the reaction, posted some of his own AI-generated images, and tried to frame it as excitement about future potential rather than an endorsement of current AI output. “I just intuitively sensed the potential,” he wrote. “It feels like there might be some intriguing stuff waiting down the line.”
That explanation hasn’t done much to calm the criticism. Many fans feel the damage is done – that a figure of Sakaguchi’s stature lending his enthusiasm to AI-generated content, however cautiously, sends a signal that the industry doesn’t need right now.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t an isolated incident. The gaming industry has been navigating a fraught relationship with generative AI for years, and major studios have faced significant pushback whenever AI-generated art has appeared in shipped products. When prominent creators – especially beloved ones like Sakaguchi – appear to champion the technology, it reignites fears about where the industry is headed.
Final Fantasy VI remains one of the most beloved JRPGs ever made. Fans want it remade – properly, by human artists who love the source material. For now, at least, that remains a dream.
