Fortnite’s biggest update of Chapter 7 Season 2 has arrived. Update v40.40 went live on May 14, 2026, and it brings two headline events at once: the long-awaited Overwatch crossover, and a sweeping redesign of the Zero Build mode that changes how the game fundamentally plays. Servers came back online around 7 AM ET after a few hours of maintenance, and there’s a lot to unpack.
Overwatch Heroes Answer the Call
Four iconic heroes from Blizzard’s Overwatch have landed on the Battle Royale island: Tracer, D.Va, Genji, and Mercy. All four are available as purchasable Outfits in the Item Shop starting today, each with matching accessories and LEGO Styles for Fortnite’s LEGO mode.
This isn’t just a cosmetic crossover – Overwatch’s world is physically reshaping the map. Four new landmarks have appeared on the island inspired by Overwatch locations: Busan Sanctuary, Hanamura Courtyard, King’s Row Tower, and bases inspired by Watchpoint: Gibraltar. Each location comes with themed loot and Overwatch-flavored fights.
Lore-wise, the Foundation has called in Overwatch reinforcements to help fight the Ice King. It’s a fun hook that ties the crossover into the ongoing Showdown Rivalries storyline rather than just dropping branded content into the void.
Iconic abilities from the hero shooter have also made their way into the loot pool. Tracer’s Pulse Pistols and Mercy’s Caduceus Staff are both available as weapons, giving players a taste of Overwatch gameplay inside Fortnite’s battle royale. A Payload also spawns each match at King’s Row Tower – escort it successfully, and everyone gets rewarded with Overwatch loot.
Epic also released an official blog post detailing the collab, and there’s a cinematic trailer worth watching if you want to see the heroes in action before dropping in. The Overwatch Porsche Cayenne EV bundle is also available, with four custom decals and a wheels set for vehicle enthusiasts.
Zero Build Gets a Complete Overhaul
Alongside the Overwatch content, v40.40 delivers the most significant changes to Zero Build mode since it launched. The old dynamic is gone – instead, the Build button has been replaced entirely by a new system called Pocket Items.
Pocket Items are unlimited-use utility tools that each have their own cooldown. You start every match with one already equipped, and you can swap them out at Vending Machines scattered around the map. Three Pocket Items are available at launch: Shockwave Grenades, Med Mist Grenades, and Shield Bubbles. It shifts Zero Build from pure shooter territory into something more tactical, giving players meaningful defensive options without bringing back builds.
Two major Glider changes also arrive with this update. You can now cut your Glider at will during deployment to enter a free fall, allowing for more dynamic drop strategies. And permanent Glider Redeploy is now in Zero Build – meaning once you have enough height, you can re-open your glider to reposition without the risk of fatal falling.
On that note: lethal fall damage has been removed from Zero Build entirely. Falling from a great height will still hurt, but it will no longer outright kill you. Combined with the glider changes, verticality now feels completely different in the mode.
Showdown Rivalries Act III and New Exotics
The ongoing Showdown Rivalries event moves into Act III with this update. The conflict between Team Foundation and Team Ice King enters what seems to be its final phase, with three new milestones for each side to unlock. Hints are already flying that the two sides may have to put their rivalry aside to face the Dark Voyager in the season’s finale live event, currently scheduled for June 5, 2026.
New Exotic weapons are also in the mix. The Exotic Recon Bow works like a scanner – fire an arrow and it reveals nearby enemies. The Overdrive Pulse Rifle grants the Overdrive movement effect while equipped. And the Exotic Leaping-Lightning Gun gives players the Hop Rocks effect, making you jump much higher while it’s in your hands.
Rivalry Mastery Umbrellas Are Finally Here
Players who have been grinding Showdown Rivalries have something to show for it at last. The Rivalry Mastery Umbrellas – exclusive glider cosmetics tied to your performance in the Rivalries event – are finally available. There are three tiers: Rivalry Master, Rivalry Grandmaster, and Rivalry GOAT, each reflecting how many Rivalry wins you’ve racked up.
What’s Next
The Icon Series gets another addition on May 15 when British rapper EsDeeKid’s bundle hits the Item Shop with themed cosmetics. A Fortnite Community Day is also confirmed for May 30, tied to the usual Power Hour Event. And with the season finale live event looming on June 5, this is shaping up to be a packed final stretch for Chapter 7 Season 2.
